'CHUPKE CHUPKE'

I had a nice, quiet, peaceful birthday. I had a friend over, shared a cake with my aunt and cousins, took some photos, and visited another friend who recently gave birth to the most beautiful little twins you ever saw. I also saw ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’ with my friend, and I loved it. Will Smith’s performance is great, and his son (also playing his son in the film) is just so cute you want to hug him. It’s a really good film with a lot of inspirational value, and I really enjoyed it (even if it made me cry a little at the end).

I did manage to inject some Bollywood into my birthday. At Maja’s brilliant suggestion, I started the day with the 'Salaam-e-Ishq' soundtrack, and I really enjoyed that. I also watched ‘Chupke Chupke’, a DVD I’ve had for a while but have been too busy to get round to watching (until yesterday).

‘Chupke Chupke’ is yet another charming Hrishikesh Mukherjee film, the fourth I’ve seen so far. It stars some of Mukherjee’s ‘usual suspects’: Jaya Bhaduri, Asrani, Amitabh Bachchan, and some other actors whose names I don’t know but whom I recall from the other Mukherjee movies I’ve seen. It also stars my darling Dharmendra and the adorable Sharmila Tagore. I loved the movie, it was funny and sweet and just so much fun to watch. It’s a comedy, with Dharmendra’s character (with a little help from his friends) trying to put one over his wife’s brother-in-law.

I’m not going to say too much else about it, other than that it’s well worth a watch and everyone in the ensemble cast is really good in it – especially Amit-ji, who steals all the scenes he’s in (although everyone else does a great job too). A few more (illustrated) statements about this film:

I’ve decided I quite like Dr. Bachchan’s son looking and acting all geeky:

Amitabh Bachchan in 'Chupke Chupke' (1975)

Amitabh Bachchan in 'Kasme Vaade' (1978)

Sharmila is too cute in this film:

Especially in yellow:

Dharam is dashing as ever:

And here’s an interesting subtitle to make you wonder (if you haven’t seen the movie):

Happy belated Birthday! I'm glad you had a nice birthday and I love the salaam-e-ishq soundtrack too, it definitely puts me in a good mood:)! Purusit of Happyness, huh? Wow, its been forever since I've seen a Hollywood film, this is one I'll have to check out upon your suggestion! At first when I glanced at the title of this post, I got all giddy because I thought it said "Chup Chupke" the comedy starring Shahid and Kareena...but then I realized its actually an older film...I have to admit I'm awry about watching older films, mostly because of the clothing and hairstyles (LOL, I know I'm superficial) he he...but this one seems worth checking out. Thanks for the indirect recommendations!

This is one of those 'Dharam-starrers' and 'Amitabh-supporter' movies that is 2nd only to Sholay as my fave with both of them in it. HM is a master at this type of movie although my favorite comedy he did was Gol Maal (the original one with Amol Palekar). My favorite HM movie? Abhimaan, hands down. By the way - Janam Din Mubarak (Happpy Birthday:)

@amy: 5 bucks says you'll love it too! Let me know what you think when you get round to it...

@angela: LOL... we all have our preferences. I really love the feel of a lot of the oldies - this one is cute - I think you'd like it. The Hollywood flick is really good too - I watch much more Bollywood than Hollywood these days but I try to make time for the ones with really good reviews. I should probably warn you, though - 'Happyness' is set in the 80s...

@sanket: First off, thanks for the birthday wishes - I love that you put them in hindi. I've heard a lot about the newer 'Golmaal', and nothing about the HM one - thanks for stirring up my curiosity. I love 'Abhimaan' sooo much - I love HM's films - they're so distinctive. I haven't seen a disappointing one yet.

@cow tse tung: Thanks - your blog is just insane (I mean that in the nicest possible way) - since I discovered it this morning, I have been unable to stop myself from returning several times to look at your older posts, and I am totally horrified yet totally fascinated. I love that combination. Keep blogging!

I've had a copy of this on my shelf for a long time. Pretty sure I watched it, but I don't remember much about it. I'll have to check it out again.
